Landmark of industrial culture

Anyone visiting Essen should make time for a piece of industrial history. Because the industrial heritage of the Ruhr region really is something very special. It impressively symbolises the future of a region that has been shaped by its industrial past like no other in the world.

  • Zeche Zollverein

Whether disused plant, industrial wasteland or slag heap – the old industrial sites have been given a new function through extensive remodelling. The Zollverein colliery, for example, is now home to an art university, old gas and water reservoirs have been converted into museums and landmarks of the region can be seen from afar on spoil tips. The industrial monuments blend naturally into the new landscape of the Ruhr region – and are definitely worth a visit!

Your leisure options

Gasometer Oberhausen

Landscape park Duisburg-Nord

In the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park, you can experience a natural and cultural landscape characterised by industry, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The 180-hectare site of the former Meiderich ironworks, where pig iron was produced for 82 years, is now home to a colourful mix of walking and cycling paths, gardens, water features, industrial history, leisure and sports facilities. The British daily newspaper “The Guardian” named the area one of the most beautiful urban oases in the world.

Europe’s largest diving centre, climbing parks, a giant tube slide through two ore bunkers and an educational farm are just some of the attractions that the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park has to offer. Stroll through the extensive grounds, enjoy the fantastic view from the roof of the disused Blast Furnace 5 – and don’t return before nightfall. Because in the evening, the old blast furnace backdrop – the industrial landmark of the north of Duisburg – shines in bright colours. Be sure to take a look! (Photo copyright: ThomasBerns)

UNESCO-World Heritage Zeche Zollverein

Discover industrial history at a place that stands for superlatives like no other: at Zollverein! The Zollverein colliery in the Stoppenberg district of Essen was not only once the largest and most powerful coal mine in the world, but also the largest central coking plant in Europe.

Today it is home to the Ruhr Museum and the Red Dot Design Museum, the Folkwang University of the Arts, other art institutions, start-ups, restaurants and much more. Experience various guided tours on the Zollverein Monument Trail, attend events on the old colliery site and get ready for impressive travel photos – it is not without reason that Zollverein has the modest nickname “The most beautiful colliery in the world”.
