Whether modern art, the history of industrialisation, church treasures or football history – with more than 200 museums, the Ruhr region has one of the largest and most extensive museum landscapes in Germany. There’s guaranteed to be something to suit even the most convinced museum-lover. How about a visit to the German Football Museum in Dortmund, for example? Or a trip to the Bochum Railway Museum? Aalto-Theater
The Aalto Theatre, Essen’s renowned opera house, is located at the foot of Essen’s Stadtgarten, just a few minutes’ walk from the main railway station. Designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, the 1,125-seat building is not only considered one of the best opera houses in the German-speaking world, it is also an architectural landmark. Aalto won an architectural competition for his design back in 1959 – but it was almost 30 years before the theatre was built and opened.
Every year, around 175 performances take place in the Aalto Theatre between September and July. Whether opera, classical ballet or concert – anyone who loves cultural events should not miss a performance at the Aalto Theatre. Around 200,000 people visit the opera house in Essen every season.

Deutsches Fußballmuseum Dortmund
Der Fußball gehört zum Ruhrgebiet wie die Pommes zur Currywurst. Wo also sonst sollte das Deutsche Fußballmuseum zu Hause sein, wenn nicht im „Pott“? Die moderne und interaktiv gestaltete Erlebnisausstellung, direkt gegenüber vom Dortmunder Hauptbahnhof, zieht nicht nur Fußballfans in ihren Bann.
In der 2015 eröffneten „Erlebniswelt des deutschen Fußballs“ erwarten Sie rund 1.600 Exponate und ihre Geschichte. Bestaunen Sie beispielsweise Original-Bälle, Original-Trikots sowie alle WM- und EM-Pokale der Nationalelf. Interaktive Exponate laden zum Mitmachen ein, 3D-Kino, 360° Bundesliga-Show und emotionale Videoshows lassen 140 Jahre deutsche Fußballgeschichte lebendig werden.
Museum Folkwang
Discover one of the most popular museums for modern art: the Museum Folkwang in Essen-Rüttenscheid. Founded in 1922, the art museum’s collection includes works of Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism and other styles of modern art. There are also regularly changing exhibitions.
The internationally renowned art museum on Essen’s Museumsplatz is only about 4 kilometres from the Hotel Bredeney. You can reach the Museum Folkwang from the exhibition centre in just a few minutes.
Villa Hügel
How about a walk to the “largest house in Essen”? Villa Hügel, the former home of the Krupp family of entrepreneurs, is just 3 kilometres from Hotel Bredeney. Visit the imposing residence with its 269 rooms and 8100 m2 of living and usable space, which impressively reflects the industrialisation of Germany. A permanent exhibition in the left wing of Villa Hügel tells you all about the history of the family and the Krupp company. Other guided tours can also be booked with a different focus, for example on the architecture, interior design or the park’s diverse flora.
Around 28 hectares in size – almost half the size of the entire Grugapark – the Hügelpark extends around Villa Hügel, above Lake Baldeney. With its sculptures, winding paths and more than 120 tree species, it looks like a unique mixture of park and botanical garden.
